An original companion story · Chapter III

Some things are carried in ink.

A weathered journal lies open to possibility. Inside are three small moments from this original journey. Turn its pages and uncover the words left in the margins.

The empty chair

At an empty house, you find a chair pulled close to the hearth. You leave a little wood beside it. Whoever returns will have one less thing to do before they can rest.

A small kindness needs no witness.

The widening circle

Beside the water, you set the lantern between two stones. Its reflection reaches farther than its flame. You move aside, leaving a dry place for the next traveller.

A light does not become less by being shared.

The unlatched door

Later, you cannot remember the colour of the door. You remember that it opened. You remember the shape of the welcome. Some things stay with us because someone made space for them.

This is the memory you choose to keep.

These visitor events and words were written for this site; they are separate from the novels.

Recover a memory

A welcome can remain long after its words are gone. 7 scenes of original companion fiction.

  1. The listening water

The water holds the trees without keeping them. A memory may work like that: a shape returning when the surface becomes quiet.

On screen: The woodland pool opens beneath near branches. Broad, faint ripples stay inside the painted water while the camera barely approaches.

  2. An unlatched door

You remember a door that did not need knocking. Before anyone spoke, there was already room for you on the other side.

On screen: An arch-like foreground passes beside the woodland. A soft opening of light at its edge leads the eye back toward the quiet pool.

  3. The unfinished page

On a page left unfinished, a few small things remain: a chair kept free, a dry stone, a light beside the door.

On screen: A close view settles on the study. A fine open-book emblem appears inside an ink-shaped aperture while the near edge briefly takes focus.

  4. What the margin keeps

The margin holds what the story almost passed over. A place was prepared for someone who had not yet arrived.

On screen: A curling ink-like mask resolves into a small doorway emblem. Its engraved line catches warm light above the painted desk, then settles.

  5. A place kept warm

Far from this room, another window is burning. You imagine the empty chair beneath it, waiting without impatience.

On screen: The night village appears through a warm localized reveal. Registered window light grows gently as the camera rises away from the near branches.

  6. The widening circle

A welcome travels farther than the person who offers it. One widening circle touches the next before either one is gone.

On screen: Two delicate ripple sets widen across the woodland pool. The foreground is held still, allowing the returning water to become the subject.

  7. Make room for another

The memory returns without asking to be kept. Make room for another, it seems to say, and there will be somewhere for it to live.

On screen: The full forest returns through an ink-like opening. Its small book emblem fades, leaving only the pool, the trees, and a deliberate quiet frame.
