An original companion story · Chapter I

Take a little light with you.

Our story begins with an unlit lantern and a road disappearing into the evening. Before you set out, give the darkness something small to answer.

A lantern, waiting.

The glass is cold. A brass shutter keeps the last trace of daylight inside. Open it; a journey only asks for a beginning.

Room for a spark.

The shutter lifts. For a moment, the evening is reflected in the glass. Touch the wick and imagine one small, stubborn flame.

A little less darkness.

Light gathers at the wick. Nothing beyond the doorstep has changed, but now you can see where to put your feet.

The first spark is yours.

You lift the lantern. Its circle of warmth moves with you. The road is still long; the next step is enough.

  1. Before the road

The valley keeps its last windows warm. Beyond them, the road has become a question that the dark will not answer.

On screen: A quiet blue valley opens behind soft near branches. Its scattered windows brighten gently while the distant landscape remains in focus.

  2. The weight of the evening

At the edge of the path, a lantern waits. It is a modest thing to set against all that distance.

On screen: The camera approaches the painted lantern low along the stone. Dark foreground leaves cross the frame before settling to one side.

  3. A little room inside

Its brass has been touched by other hands. You imagine opening the shutter and leaving a little room for light.

On screen: The lantern fills more of the view. A narrow brass aperture opens around its painted light as the near edge comes into focus.

  4. The first breath

A spark is almost nothing. Then it touches the wick, and almost nothing becomes enough to see by.

On screen: An engraved lantern emblem changes shape beside the wick. Fine ember traces gather toward the core before a restrained glow opens outward.

  5. What the flame finds

The light discovers a stone, a blade of grass, the beginning of the path. The world returns in small pieces.

On screen: Three fine threads of light move out from the lantern through the lower path. Its glow stays registered to the brass while the frame slowly lifts.

  6. A companion on the wall

A shadow follows the flame across the stone. Even the darkness has found a way to travel beside you.

On screen: Near foliage passes across the lower edge while the lantern keeps a steady light. A soft foreground silhouette separates from the distant path.

  7. Enough for the next step

There is no need to light the whole valley. Carry enough for the next step, and let the next step bring the rest.

On screen: The view opens back to the full lantern path. A final thin circle fades around the flame, leaving the painted road and its quiet horizon.
